SPECIFIC LEARNING DISORDERS

  • Learning disability consists of a number of disorders that may affect the acquisition, organization, retention, comprehension or use of verbal or nonverbal information. These disorders affect learning in individuals who otherwise possess at least average abilities required for thinking and/or reasoning. This is where learning disabilities are distinct from global intellectual deficiency. The symptoms first manifest during the years of formal schooling and is characterized by persistent and impairing difficulties with learning foundational academic skills in reading, writing, and/or math. The four main learning disabilities are dyslexia – difficulty in reading; dysgraphia – difficulty in writing; dyscalculia – difficulty in arithmetic; and dyspraxia – difficulty in practicing due to lack of motor coordination.
