ASD is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing complications in social interaction and communication. This is displayed across multiple contexts, including deficits in social reciprocity, nonverbal communicative behaviours used for social interaction, and skills in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships. The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder also requires the presence of restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities. These include rocking back and forth, flapping hands, hitting head on objects, parroting speech (e.g., echolalia) etc. Children could line up their toys in certain patterns.
